Document Description
Notice of Exemption pursuant to CEQA Guidelines Section 15301, Class 1 (Existing Facilities) and 15303, Class 3 (New Construction or Conversion of Small Structures). The Heart of Los Angeles Outdoor Classroom project proposed to install two 960 square foot prefabricated modular classrooms within the Augustus F. Hawkins Nature Park. The classrooms are designed to facilitate outdoor learning in the natural environment of the park, fostering immersive educational opportunities. In addition, site improvements including landscaping and parking upgrades are anticipated to ensure biodiversity and sustainability. The project will also include a renovation of the existing restrooms at the direction of Recreation and Parks.

Reasons for Exemption
In accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), this project is Categorically Exempt pursuant to section 15301 (Existing Facilities) and 15303 (New Construction or Conversion of Small Structures). Section 15301, Class 1 consists of the operation, repair, maintenance, permitting, leasing, licensing, or minor alteration of existing public or private structures, facilities, mechanical equipment, or topographical features, involving negligible or no expansion of existing or former use. Section 15303, Class 3 consists of construction and location of limited numbers of new, small facilities or structures; installation of small new equipment and facilities in small structures; and the conversion of existing small structures from one use to another where only minor modifications are made in the exterior of the structure.
