Document Description
The Countywide Sidewalk Connectivity Plan (Plan) will recommend sidewalk improvements based on the creation of a comprehensive database of sidewalk coverage at targeted locations throughout unincorporated San Joaquin County {County), and community outreach. The Plan will also assess and track the condition and Americans with Disabilities Act {ADA) compliance of the existing sidewalk infrastructure. Ultimately the goal is to analyze present existing conditions of over 325 miles of roadway in the unincorporated County and recommend improvements to increase connectivity, accessibility, and safety of the sidewalk network. The Plan will provide the foundation needed for further efforts to increase active transportation and mode shift, therefore, reducing air pollution and improving community health. The development of pedestrian facilities is a social equity effort in itself, as it improves the quality of life by supporting lowercost transportation modes in comparison to owning and operating a vehicle. A key component of this Plan includes robust community engagement through a variety of public outreach methods such as public meetings, open houses at local community centers, working with elementary and middle schools in the area, ongoing discussions with Walkability Work Group, project website, and surveys. The primary goals of public outreach include inter-agency coordination and involvement, reaching disadvantaged/low-income communities across San Joaquin County, and facilitating community consensus building.
