Document Description
CAL FIRE along with Fire Protection Districts, Resource Conservation Districts, Fire Safe Councils, Commissions, Utility Providers, Power Producers, property owners and similar propose to conduct fuel reduction work along both sides of road segments leading into, and in the area of the Geysers Geothermal Area within the County of Sonoma. All of the work is proposed to take place within the public road right-of-way and or on private lands, approximately 30’ up to 100’ from the edge of the road surface along Ridge Road, Socrates Mine Road, Pine Flat Road, Cloverdale Geysers Road, (Healdsburg) Geysers Road, Geysers Resort Road, County Line Road, Pine Mountain Fire Road, Pine Mountain Road, Cadd-Dunlavy Fire Trail, Rattlesnake Fire Trail, Western Pine Fire Trail, Le Esperance, Cold Water Creek, West Squaw Creek, Squaw Creek, Dillingham Road, John Kincade Road, Kincade Road, and Wildhorse Roads. This project will include removal of dead trees, brush and grass; limbing remaining trees to 6’ above the ground; removing vegetation <4” DBH; removing selected large hazard trees; and removing branches overhanging the roadway while retaining enough canopy to provide shade. Heavy equipment will remain along the road prism, and no ground disturbing activities will occur. Slash and debris will be disposed of onsite via mulching, chipping, or lop and scatter.

Reasons for Exemption
The project is categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Guidelines Section 15304 (i) Minor Alterations to Land - Fuel management activities within 30 feet to 100 feet of structures to reduce the volume of flammable vegetation, provided that the activities will not result in the taking of endangered, rare, or threatened plant or animal species or significant erosion and sedimentation of surface waters. The understory fuel reduction is a minor alteration to land that involves fuel management activities within 30 to 100 feet of structures.
