The project includes the following repairs to the envelope of the University House, which serves as the UC Berkeley Chancellor’s residence and event venue: (1) removal of loose paint and decayed wood; (2) treatment of exposed weathered areas; (3) repair and replacement of wood areas with significant section loss and/or decay; (4) resealing of gaps between wood frames and façade; (5) replacement of broken glazing; (6) repainting of window and door frames; and (7) cleaning of the exterior façade.

Reasons for Exemption
The proposed project is categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Guidelines Section 15301, Class 1 Existing Facilities, as it involves improvements to an existing property involving no expansion of existing or former use. The project is also categorically exempt pursuant to CEQA Guidelines Section 15331, Class 31 Historical Resource Restoration/Rehabilitation, as it is a rehabilitation project that complies with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Therefore, the project will not result in a substantial adverse change to the building such that its historical significance would be impaired. Furthermore, there are no unusual circumstances creating the possibility that the project will have a significant effect on the environment, pursuant to CEQA Section 15300.2.
