Document Description
Repair and restore eroded sections of the Cemetery Road and internal Cemetery Pathways at Bodie State Historic Park to prevent future erosion and degradation to cultural resources to improve the visitor experience. Work will use heavy equipment and hand tools to: • Distribute approx. 60 cu. yds. of class II road base material along the existing road alignment to bring the road up to grade and fill in gullies (ground disturbance is limited to approx. 1-ft deep x 2-ft wide beyond edge of road); • Construct approx. six to eight (6-8) 12-ft long x 14 – 18-in. tall x 6 – 8-ft wide rolling humps; • Repair and reconstruct the severely gullied pathways; • De-compact the soil to a depth of approx. 6-in. on the pathways identified for repair; • Distribute approx. 30 cu. yds. of class II road base fill, to a depth of no more than 2-in., to fill/re-grade sections of entrenched pathways, naturally formed gullies, and compromised grave sites; • Compact fill distributed on pathways; • Install approx. 20 cu. yds. of 9-in. x 16-in. rock to delineate pathways; • Cut and remove overgrown sagebrush and other vegetation from an historic ditch; • Remove debris from existing culverts for maintenance; and • Post new wayfaring signage on the existing fence near the entrance and turnstile. Cultural Resource staff will cut and remove vegetation from compromised grave sites, use rocks to delineate the perimeter of known graves; and conduct 1 cu. m. surface transect units (STU) to determine the presence/absence of burials and to identify areas for reburials necessary due to erosion.

Project consists of the operation, maintenance, or minor alteration of existing public or private structures, facilities, or topographical features, involving negligible or no expansion of use beyond current levels; replacement or reconstruction of existing structures and facilities where the new structure will be located on the same site as the structures replaced and will have substantially the same purpose and capacity as the structure replaced; construction and location of limited numbers of new, small facilities or structures, included as “Trail or road repairs” and “Construction or installation of park facilities, such as interpretive signing or panels” in the Department of Parks and Recreation’s list of exempt activities in accordance with CCR §15300.4; minor public or private alterations in the condition of land and/or vegetation which do not involve removal of healthy, mature, scenic trees; and maintenance, repair, stabilization, rehabilitation, restoration, preservation, conservation, or reconstruction of historical resources in a manner consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring, and Reconstructing Historic Buildings (1995), Weeks and Grimmer.
