SC State Beach Monarch Overwintering Site Enhancement Project

Selective thinning of a small area of blue gum eucalyptus suckers. Suckers with <4" dbh will be removed in order to benefit tree health and sustainability for monarch clustering. Several native shrub and forb plants will be planted that would serve as nectar sources for overwintering monarchs and other pollinators. Using existing paths and islands, Parks plans to build up 5 new planters with with new soil mounded within the planters for pollinator nectar and wind screening plants in an area outside the recreational areas. Planters would be composed of peeler logs and soil and would be imported to fill planters. Plant material would be sourced from local Tree of Life nursery. Drip irrigation will be installed as part of this project to ensure plant survivorship and will tie into existing irrigation infrastructure. Some light trenching will be required for irrigation. Four interpretative panels will be installed along the Butterfly Trail at San Clemente State Beach. The panels will be low profile, mounted at an angle on 4"x4" posts, which will be buried 18" into the ground with a heigh of 27"-34" off the ground, compliant with ADA requirements. The panels will be placed along an accessible route adjacent and outside the path. The panels will share the fascinating story of the monarch butterfly, including conservation information to protect the species.
