Document Description
Coachella Unit 2 gas turbine started operations in 1973 rated at 23.15MW. Records show that the generator and turbine have never been overhauled, except for a hot gas path turbine inspection once. Based on Coachella’s gas turbine plant operating profile, the OEM recommends performing a major overhaul every 15 years. Presently, the unit has a generator field ground fault. On August 8th 2023, on-site generator electrical testing was performed on the Unit 2 generator. Based on the field testing, the unit does not meet operational expectations from an electrical standpoint: A generator rotor ground problem was detected. To address the root cause of the generator rotor fault, the rotor was determined to need a full rewind. The Coachella gas turbines are IID’s peak season generators that are critical to the reliable operation of the IID Balancing Authority. The Coachella Generating Station gas turbines units 1 and 2 along with units 3 and 4 are critical for providing System Operations Center with voltage support, non-spin reserve capacity and reactive regulation. Repair of the rotor will result in reduced life cycle costs and increased reliability and availability of the turbine generator.
