Document Description
Caltrans proposes to replace and upgrade the existing bridge rails and sidewalks to current safety standards at the 3rd Street Undercrossing (PM 0.77, Bridge No. 34 0030S) and the 23rd Street Overcrossing (PM 3.37, Bridge No. 34 0035) along U.S. Route 101 in the City and County of San Francisco.
The purpose of this project is to upgrade the bridge rails to meet current crash and safety standards to ensure the protection of the traveling public and enhance the reliability of the bridge rails. This project is also needed to improve the Asset Management Rating of the bridge barrier railing for both structures to a GOOD rating in the Asset Management Survey. The current Structure Maintenance and Investigation (SMI) determination that the bridge barrier railing for both structures are rated POOR in the Asset Management Survey. These structures exhibit several extensive cracks and corrosion in the balusters, along the rail at various locations, and are subject to deterioration. The bridge rails will be upgraded to meet current standards and to comply with the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) criteria for replacements.
The project will include the removal of existing bridge sidewalk and railings, construction of standard bridge sidewalk and railings, replacement of existing guardrail and bridge mounted sign, and instillation of anchor block, chain link fence, and concrete barrier. All project activities are within Caltrans right-of-way (ROW).
