Document Description
The Project is limited to installing rip-rap bank protection, installing rip-rap barbs to direct flow away from the bank, removing vegetation on a gravel bar in Garnet Creek to prevent trees from directing flow toward the bank, and installing and maintaining a riparian restoration area. Prior to installing bank protection and barbs, the area to be covered by rip-rap will be excavated to 2.5 feet below existing soil level. Rip-rap will be placed on the lowest 3 feet of the left bank of Garnet Creek for 240 feet where the bank has eroded and further erosion threatens property. Four barbs will extend into the stream from the protected bank. Each rip-rap barb will have an average width of three feet. Each barb will be five to 10 feet wide on the landside where it connects to with rip-rap bank protection; barb width will taper as it extends 10 to 12 feet into the stream. Barb height will also taper from a maximum of eight to 10 feet on the land-side as barbs extend into the stream. Each barb will be pointed slightly upstream. A maximum of five eucalyptus trees (Eucalyptus sp.) over three inches Diameter at Breast Height will be felled and removed from a gravel bar in the stream. Stumps and root balls will be removed; the hole will be filled and compacted with gravel. Work will be conducted using a backhoe, bulldozer, excavator, or similar equipment to move soil and rip-rap; a backhoe or similar equipment to remove eucalyptus segments and root balls; and hand tools including chainsaws to fell and cut eucalyptus. Access to work areas will be via existing roads and non-vegetated stream access; no vegetation removal or grading will occur to facilitate access. No dewatering or in-water work will occur. The project will result in 1,063 square feet and 191 linear feet of permanent impact and approximately 5,180 square feet and 400 linear feet of temporary impact to stream and riparian habitats. A maximum of 5 non-native trees will be removed.
