Document Description
The project is limited to protecting a pipeline segment that is subject to exposure from erosive forces within the stream. Activities will include excavating an approximately 15-foot-long, 12-foot-wide, 2-feet-deep trench within the streambed to expose the pipeline, with an appropriate slope to facilitate installation of the pipeline protection materials. The excavation will remove approximately 12 cubic yards of sediment. All excavation will be performed with hand tools only and limited to the streambed where the pipeline is located; no excavation will occur within the streambanks. The exposed pipeline surface will be cleaned of soil and debris with a small shovel or trowel so the pipeline protection materials can be applied. All materials will be hand carried into the stream corridor. First, a base layer of black diamond carbon filter will be installed around the pipeline. Next, a 1-inch thick rock guard will be installed, followed by 2-inch nominal thickness high-density polyethylene timber fastened to the pipeline with stainless steel straps every 24-inches along the pipeline. The pipeline protection materials are designed and will be installed in such a way as to be resistant to wash out during high velocity stream flows. Upon completion, excavated materials will be replaced and compacted to restore the preexisting stream contours. The surface layer of cobble substrate will be removed and set aside during excavation, and then replaced following construction in the impacted area using hand tools. The project area including the access area immediately north of the stream will be mowed for fire suppression.
