Humboldt County Resource Conservation District would provide grant funding through the CAL FIRE Forest Health Grant Program to the Yurok Tribe to treat a total of 1,300 acres of post-industrial timberland using timber management, fuels management, and post-harvest fuels management. This area was identified in the Yurok Tribe Yurok Sustained Yield Lands Forest Management Plan as areas in need of fuels reduction. These treatments will reduce wildfire risks to local resources and community members, promote native plant and wildlife species, safeguard carbon stock, and improve forest resiliency.

Notice of Exemption

Exempt Status
Statutory Exemption
Type, Section or Code
Public Resources Code Section 4799.05 (d)(1)
Reasons for Exemption
The California Environmental Quality Act does not apply to fuel reduction, reforestation and habitat restoration projects undertaken, in whole or in part, on federal lands to reduce the risk of high severity wildfire that have been reviewed under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), if the primary role of a state or local agency is providing funding or staffing for those projects. Humboldt County Resource Conservation District will provide grant funds to the Yurok Tribe, a federally recognized tribe, to reduce forest fuels and risk of catastrophic wildfire. The proposed project was reviewed in its entirety under the Pecwan Forest Health Project, Phase 1 Lands, Environmental Assessment and the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) signed April 2023.
