Document Description
Complete demolition and clean-up of the remains of the 1928 Schoolhouse and 1935 Pumphouse in Shasta State Historic Park that were both partially destroyed during the 2018 Carr Fire and perform soil samples to establish the extent of contamination from burned materials. Clean up of these buildings will include:
• Removal of remaining fire debris and ash;
• Removal of building remains and foundations; and
• Removal of up to 6-inches of surface soils.
Following debris removal, soil samples will be collected as follows:
• Four (4) soil samples collected within the footprint of the former schoolhouse between ground surface to 18inches in depth;
• Two (2) soil samples collected from the footprint of the former pumphouse between ground surface and 18inches in depth;
• Three (3) “background” samples taken a minimum of 20-ft from the ash footprint between ground surface and up to 18-inches in depth; and
• Place all samples into sealable plastic bags and transport to a laboratory for analytical testing.

Project consists of the operation, maintenance, or minor alteration of existing public or private structures, facilities, or topographical features, involving negligible or no expansion of use beyond current levels; minor public or private alterations in the condition of land and/or vegetation which do not involve removal of healthy, mature, scenic trees; and basic data collection and resource evaluation activities which do not result in a serious major disturbance to an environmental resource, and is included as “Soils and structural engineering tests” in the Department of Parks and Recreation’s list of exempt activities in accordance with CCR § 15300.4.
