Document Description
The Drop 1 hydroelectric power plant (turbine) Unit 1's major components (runner hub, drive shaft, turbine-generator, gear box) require refurbishment to maintain Unit 1's reliability. Drop 1 U1 was last repaired in 2006 and to-date the unit has been in operation approximately 17 years. The manufacturer recommends that turbine components be inspected and overhauled (including all necessary checks, alignments and commissioning tests) after 15 years of continuous operation. All seals, bushings, and bearings must also be replaced. The U1 is continuously running necessitating the replacement of lubricant frequently. The increased frequency of maintenance on the unit, beyond normal O&M activities, is indicative of larger problems looming. Refurbishment of turbine components provides an opportunity to maintain energy output, reliability of operation, and environmental soundness.
