Document Description
The Niland Generating Station gas turbines Units 1 and 2 are critical for providing IID’s System Operations Center with voltage support, spin and non-spin reserve capacity and reactive regulation. The gas turbines are a key part of the IID resource portfolio by providing energy and ancillary services to the IID Balancing Authority. The Niland combustion gas turbines require an inlet air cooling system to reduce their temperature to below ambient when operating during high ambient temperature conditions. In July 2022, compressor B (one of two) ailed during operation. Upon inspection the compressor would not rotate due to extensive metal transfer from the tow rotors to the main rotor body casing causing severe damage and major impairment to various internal components. By replacing compressor B, IID increases the Niland plant’s inlet air cooling chiller system reliability and ensures the CGT units are capable of responding during high ambient temperature conditions demands.
