Document Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes immediately replacing four (4) damaged culvert systems in Calaveras County on State Route (SR) 26 at Post Miles (PM) 4.87, 9.22, 9.54, and 9.55. Extreme rainfall overwhelmed the 4 culvert systems. The excessive pressure in the culverts caused pipe joints to fail under the roadway. Water coming from the pipe joints undermined the westbound traveled lane and shoulder at each location. The scope of work at PM 4.87 included replacing the existing 12” Corrugated Steel Pipe (CSP) with a new 18” CSP. At PM 9.22, the existing 30” CSP was replaced with a new 30” CSP. At PM 9.54, the two existing 24” CSPs were replaced with two new 24” CSPs. At PM 9.55, the existing 24” CSP was replaced with a new 24” CSP. The scope of work also included removing loose material from the damaged embankments and backfilling with suitable material and placing Rock Slope Protection at the 4 culvert systems. The purpose of this project is to immediately rectify structural and drainage damages caused by the extreme storm event. The project is needed to prevent the loss or impairment of life, property, or essential public services.
