Document Description
The project is limited to one encroachment to stabilize and reconstruct a segment of Mattole Road damaged by the “Roscoe Slide.” The slide extends from above the roadway down to the toe of the slope, adjacent to the bank of the Mattole River. The project seeks to restore the roadway, improve roadway drainage, and reduce erosion potential along the toe of the slide. Primary elements of the project include vegetation removal, construction of a temporary access road, construction of longitudinal and transverse slope sub-drainage, construction of a reinforced road embankment, replacement of an existing culvert, and bioengineered rock armoring along the Mattole River comprising 9,000 square feet of live willow cuttings. Willows will be interplanted among rock armoring and irrigated either by water collected from the hillslope slide, or by a temporary infiltration-basin developed in the bar of the Mattole. Depending on channel conditions at the time of construction, the project may entail river diversion or dewatering and fish relocation.
