Document Description
On October 16, 2022, the El Centro Generation Station Unit 2-1 generator breaker was permanently damaged by a fire that occurred within the breaker switchgear. The switchgear needs to be replaced in order to return the unit to safe and reliable operation. The replacement of the switchgear is critical for the continued operation of Unit 2-1 and Unit 2-2. The Unit 2 combined cycle plant is composed of the Unit 2-2 combustion turbine-generator and the Unit 2-1 steam turbine-generator. These two units have the ability to provide 106 MW of energy during the summer months and provide the IID Balancing Authority with voltage support, spin reserve and regulation. The Unit 2-1 switch gear replacement will require the procurement and installation of refurbished switchgear and related equipment in order to meet the expected summer demand for load and ancillary services (regulation, capacity, frequency response, spin reserve). The equipment associated with the switchgear damaged in the fire includes but is not limited to (generator leads, conduit, current measuring instrumentation, insulators and control wiring).
