Document Description
The project consists of removing trees along SR 44 in Shasta County, CA between PM R 20.8-R 22.3 to maintain safe and reliable electric service and mandated clearance to comply with federal and state regulatory requirements for public safety and fire prevention. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) identified 65 tree removals under or adjacent to the PG&E Volta 110212 kilovolt (kV) electric distribution line on California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Right Of Way (ROW) land in Shasta County, California. Additionally, 34 trees will be removed outside of the Caltrans ROW; crews will access these trees using the highway. No ground disturbance in the form of excavation is associated with this work. Approved herbicide is prescribed. Caltrans would issue an encroachment permit for work within the State ROW.

The California Department of Transportation has determined the project to be categorically exempt in accordance with Section 15301 (Existing Facilities), Class 1 (Operation, repair, maintenance, permitting, leasing, licensing, or minor alteration of existing public or private structures, facilities, mechanical equipment, or topographical features, involving negligible or no expansion of use beyond that existing at the time of the lead agency’s determination), Subclass (h)—Maintenance of existing landscaping, native growth, and water supply reservoirs. The project would have no significant effect on the environment.
