Document Description
Caltrans District 9 is proposing a project to replace/supplement existing horizontal alignment signs (curve warning signs), and/or install additional curve warning signs in new locations where necessary on all State Routes in Kern, Inyo, and Mono Counties. These routes include Highway (HWY) 6, State Route (SR) 14, SR 58, SR 89, SR 108, SR 120, SR 127, SR 158, SR 168, SR 178, SR 182, SR 202, SR 203, SR 266, SR 270, and HWY 395. The purpose of the project is to provide road users with advanced warning of unexpected conditions on or adjacent to the roadway that might not be readily apparent. The signs will comply with California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD) 2012. Multiple existing horizontal alignment signs in Kern, Inyo, and Mono Counties may not currently meet the requirements of the CA MUTCD 2012. The proposed work consists of:
1. Removing and replacing post and sign panels
2. Installing new signs and posts where required
3. Installing chevrons and change in alignment arrows where required.
Work associated with this project will include:
1. Removal and replacement of existing wood or metal post mounted signsresulting in minor disturbance at each location associated with removal of existing sign posts (4”x4”, 4”x6”) and installation of new wood or steel posts up to 4”x6”. Per CT standard plans posts are installed to a depth of approximately 6’ or less.
2. Treated wood waste will be created from the signpost removals.
3. Work will remain within the maintained shoulder.
4. Locations are provided in the attached excel spreadsheet.
5. Staging will occur within existing disturbed areas within the state right of way.

Reasons for Exemption
All work will be performed within the existing pavement and shoulder backing with no new construction. No vegetation or dirt will be disturbed outside the existing pavement, shoulder backing, and contractor use areas. All proposed work and contractor staging/use areas are within the exiting disturbed/maintained areas within Caltrans right-of-way. With the implementation of avoidance and minimization measures, no known Environmental resources will be impacted.
