Document Description
The 32-acre Front Country Fire Break project will re-establish and maintain a 27-mile-long fire break road at the base of the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains in western Yolo County from County Road 40 in Rumsey to Highway 128 in Winters. This area has been identified by the Yolo County Quantitative Wildfire Risk Assessment Report and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) as having the highest fire hazard in Yolo County. This fire break will be used for emergency access and/or burning-out operations to stop the spread of fires at the base of the foothills from crossing west into adjoining counties, or east into the Capay Valley. Most of the fire break was created during the County Fire in 2018 and the LNU fire in 2020; some of it has been in place as early as 2004. Subsequent fire events have resulted in a patchwork of inadequately maintained breaks. This project will maintain the entire 27 miles. Project implementation will consist of using box and belly scrapers to maintain a continuous dirt strip about 10-12 feet wide. No new roads or trails will be constructed.
