Document Description
Caltrans and the Fort Independence Tribe have executed a Cooperative Agreement to facilitate the transfer of funds to the Tribe for construction of monument markers at the northern and southern boundaries of the Fort Independence Indian Community’s Reservation adjacent to US 395 in Inyo County at post mile 76.0 and 77.34. The purpose of the project is to improve aesthetics, beautify shared spaces in and around the Tribal community, provide a point of pride for the Fort Independence Tribe and inform travelers to the Eastern Sierra and their ancestral Tribal Lands. The Project is needed to denote the boundaries of the Fort Independence Reservation along US 395 and improve the place-making attributes of the Tribe’s community. The monuments will be constructed on the existing facility in previously disturbed areas within Caltrans operational easement and of the clear recovery zone.
