CAL FIRE would provide funding to the Sierra Institute for Community and Environment to conduct ecologically based thinning and fuels treatments on USFS lands. These treatments will reduce wildfire risks to local resources and community members, promote native plant and wildlife species, and improve forest resiliency.

Lassen National Forest: Adjacent to Lake Almanor’s western shore, beginning just south of the Lake Almanor West community and ending at the Canyon Dam Boat Launch facility. From the Canyon Dam boat launch facility, the project area expands southwest from the shore crossing California State Highway 89, through the community of Big Meadows, and back to the Lake Almanor West community. Project area is in Management Area 38: T. 27N, R. 8E, Sec, 18, 19, 20, and 30; T27N, R7E, Sec. 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 23, and 24; Mount Diablo Meridian.

Reasons for Exemption
CEQA does not apply to fuel reduction projects undertaken on federal lands to reduce the risk of high severity wildfire that have been reviewed under the NEPA, if the primary role of a state or local agency is providing funding or staffing for those projects. The proposed project was reviewed in its entirety under the NEPA West Shore Community Wildfire Protection Project Environmental Assessment and Decision Notice, and Finding of No Significant Impact signed on 12/16/21.
