Document Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to install two ramp meter systems at Greenback Lane and Elkhorn Blvd loop and slip on-ramps to eastbound Interstate 80 (I-80) at Post Mile (PM) 14.4 to 14.58 in Sacramento County. The purpose of this project is to install ramp metering on the Eastbound Greenback/Elkhorn loop and slip-on ramps for High Occupancy Vehicles preferential lanes (HOVPL) helping to reduce ramp metering violations and collisions during traffic congestion. The project is needed as Eastbound I-80 experiences recurrent congestion contributing to increased delay as well as merge related collisions with uncontrolled traffic entering the freeway at the loop and slip on-ramps. The existing General Purpose (GP) lanes are metered, and High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) are not metered. Installing ramp meters for HOVPL will help to alleviate mainline operations and to reduce collisions.
