Document Description
Pacific Power is planning maintenance activities on their existing 12.5 kilovolt (kV) overhead distribution lines within the City of Weed and elsewhere in Siskiyou County. The activities are the outcome of Pacific Power's continued fire mitigation program of system hardening in California and is being conducted in accordance with the California Public Utilities Commission guidelines. Work would occur within Caltrans’ right-of-way along Interstate 5 in Siskiyou County from post mile R22.956 to 23.195 and would consist of reconductoring the line with a spacer cable system (i.e., wires), updating system protection and other equipment as needed, the replacement of one wood pole structure with fiberglass, fire-resistant structure, and replacement of guy wires (anchor located outside Caltrans’ right-of-way). Structure construction and conductor stringing would include cutting and removal of existing structure within Caltrans’ right-of-way. New fiberglass poles would be hoisted into place using a line truck. Reconductoring the new distribution line includes first temporarily relocating the existing conductor such that it can remain energized while the new conductor is installed. Next, rigging would be installed at each pole to allow for the new conductor to be pulled into place. Once strung, the conductor would be transferred to its permanent location on all poles and the old conductor would be removed. After the new distribution line is energized, the former distribution line would be de-energized. A tractor and trailer with reels would be used to pull the ground wire and deenergized lines. Replacement poles would be installed immediately adjacent to the existing pole. Caltrans will issue an encroachment permit (0222-6UF-1041) for work occurring within Caltrans’ right-of-way.

The project would not have a significant effect on the environment.
