Document Description
Delta Field Division (DFD) staff will clear sediment and debris from multiple culverts along the primary and secondary sides of the California Aqueduct (CAAQ) from Banks Pumping Plant (BAPP) intake channel and Check 1 to Check 4. Culverts vary in size and length with an average opening diameter of 1 foot. Not all culverts will require to be cleared and will be evaluated individually by DFD staff. The upstream opening of each culvert will be cleared with hand tools or backhoe as necessary. Materials will be pushed into the v-ditch to be spread by the road grader to reshape the v-ditch to the original drainage specifications during the CAAQ secondary road grading SOP work which will occur concurrently. Culverts will be cleaned using a truck staged on either the primary or secondary roadside with a fire hose connected to a three-inch water pump. The hose and pump will inject high pressure raw water through the culvert until it is clear of sediment and obstructions. Water will be injected from the upstream side towards the downstream side so that the discharge of water mimics the natural direction of stormwater runoff. A containment system will be used for clearing out culverts adjacent to Bethany Reservoir to prevent sediment and/or trash from going into the reservoir. Access will be from the nearest roadway crossing of the CAAQ and from the O&M yard or Kelso Road and Byron Highway for BAAP. Overnight equipment staging shall be done at the O&M yard or nearest check station. Daily staging will be on existing roadways, and all DFD service equipment shall be removed at the end of each workday. All work is within DWR right of way.
