Document Description
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) proposes transportation safety improvements along the above-noted corridors to increase pedestrian and bicyclist visibility and safety. The proposed project includes a lane reduction to decrease traffic speed, upgrading Class II bicycle lanes to Class IV bicycle lanes, and providing shoulder space for pedestrians (no parking would be allowed) on part of the roadway between the bicycle lane and sidewalk along the project corridor. Additional proposed pedestrian improvements include painted safety zones, continental (painted/hatched) crosswalks or raised crosswalks, and pedestrian refuge islands throughout the project corridor.

This project in its approved form has been determined to be exempt from environmental review because it is eligible for a Statutory Exemption per Public Resources Code section 21080.25 since it would implement bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements; improve customer information and wayfinding for transit riders, bicyclists, or pedestrians; will be carried out by a public agency; is located within an existing public right of way in an urbanized area; would not add physical infrastructure that increases new automobile capacity on existing rights-of-way; would not require the demolition of affordable housing units; would not exceed a cost of one hundred million dollars ($100,000,000) in 2020 United States dollars; and would be constructed by San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Public Works Shops and would not require the use of contractors for labor.
