Document Description
Notice of exemption for Coastal Conservancy approval of grant funding. The LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired’s Youth Adventurer Project will provide completely accessible coastal recreational activities for 30 blind high school students and young adults (ages 14 to 26) from the San Francisco Bay Area. Blind youth are often excluded from recreational and outdoor activities, including coastal activities, due to misconceptions about abilities, overprotective families, transportation barriers, and self-confidence issues related to lack of experience. The project will significantly reduce these barriers by offering accessible activities specifically for blind kids at free or reduced cost. Over the course of two years, the project will enable participants to explore and enjoy California coastal locations, learn more about the environment, and develop life skills and confidence. Activities include kayaking, surfing, educational outings, and beach fun; however, while the focus of these activities will be fun and adventure with blind peers and mentors, students will also practice the skills of blindness and independence. They will also develop leadership skills and will learn more about science and the natural world. This project will include environmental education including museum and aquarium visits, group discussions, and opportunities to enjoy and appreciate natural resources.
