Document Description
The project provides experiential on-and-under-the-ocean stewardship training and marine science education opportunities to young members of the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians on the Sonoma-Mendocino coast. Participants visit Fort Ross Historic State Park, Russian Gulch State Park, and Salt Point State Park where they train and become certified in SCUBA, learn about marine biology, and ocean conservation. The program goal is to create curiosity and a sense of excitement about the ocean and raise awareness of how scientific research, education, and community engagement can help reverse current deadlines in ocean health and biodiversity while strengthening participants' connection to their ancestral coastline.
