Kizh Nation Cultural and Environmental Stewardship Camp

Notice of exemption for Coastal Conservancy approval of grant funding. The Kizh Nation Cultural and Environmental Stewardship Camp will provide approximately 45 Kizh Nation tribal youth and adult members with day trips to several culturally significant locations along the coast including the Dana Point Ecological Reserve, Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, Los Cerritos Wetlands, Bolsa Chica State Beach, Ballona Wetlands, and others. The camp will also include a weeklong overnight camping trip to Catalina Island. The Tribal participants will be taught ancient stories from Tribal Elders who will highlight the Tribe’s ancestral lineage to the coastal location and the location’s cultural significance within the Tribe’s ancestral territory. In tandem, the participants will be able to explore the native flora and fauna of the location, be taught by the Tribal Biologist about the location’s ecological significance to the Tribe, and discuss ways the Tribe can fulfill its hereditary obligation of stewardship for coastal locations. A main goal of the program is to strengthen the knowledge base within the current and the next generation of the Tribe with the Tribe’s oral history and traditional ecological knowledge so the information can be used to support the protection and preservation of the land and the Tribe’s rich culture in the future generations.
