Document Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) made bridge repairs on State Route (SR) 70 at the Grand Avenue Overcrossing (OC), near postmile 15.432, in Butte County. The purpose of this emergency project was to restore the bridge to a structurally sound condition. The project was needed as damage to two girders, which occurred when a vehicle hit the structure, requires repair. On March 15, 2021, the Grand Avenue OC was hit by a high-load truck traveling westbound on SR 70, damaging the two girders. District Maintenance personnel and a Structures Construction Engineer performed an on-site assessment of the damage and determined a need for the damaged girders to be repaired. The damaged girders were weakened and lacked sufficient strength to support live loads on the portion of the deck above them. This problem was addressed as soon as possible in order to avoid the failure of travel way and/or threat of failure to the transportation system and to prevent or mitigate the loss or impairment of life, health, property, and essential public services.
