Document Description
DESCRIPTION OF THE NATURE AND PURPOSE OF PROJECT: Repair weather-damaged exterior stairs and make second floor interior improvements on the Knotwell Drugstore/Masonic Lodge located in the North Bloomfield Historic District at Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park to improve access and safety. Work will: • Stair Foundation: Remove and replace existing concrete posts and bases. o Excavate six (6) new holes 15” in diameter by 12” deep, fill holes with concrete mixed on site and use hand tools to blend excavated material with existing site contours. • Stair Bracing: Remove and replace existing (4) 2”x6” angle supports mid span of stringers and fasten to posts with (3) SDS25312. • Stair Framing: Remove existing 2”x12” stair stringers and replace with 7-1/2” closed rise (11” run); remove existing 2”x12” stair treads and replace with ½” edge curved nosing on tread, remove and replace existing 4”x4”, 4”x8”, and 4”x6” framing; install new ADA code compliant elements; and replace all removed weather exposed glulams, beams, posts, and stair stringers with either pressure treated lumber or with wood of natural resistance to decay. • Interior Work (as needed): Remove and replace carpet in lodge room; prime and paint interior walls and ceilings; repair and plaster walls; repair and replace light fixtures; refinish wood flooring and wood walls; and refurbish approximately 30 chairs inside lodge room, entry way, and preparation room.

Project consist of the repair and maintenance of existing public or private structure involving negligible or no expansion of us beyond current levels; the replacement or reconstruction of existing structures and facilities where the new structure will be located on the same site as the structure replaced and will have substantially the same purpose and capacity as the structure replaced; the minor public or private alterations in the condition of land, water and/or vegetation which does not involve the removal of healthy mature scenic trees; and the maintenance, repair, stabilization and preservation of historical resources, in a manner consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring and Reconstructing Historic Buildings (1995), Weeks and Grimmer.
