Document Description
This project will rehabilitate and stabilize the 36 bells located in the towers of Hearst Castle's Casa Grande at Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument to return the bells to their condition during the period of time when William Randolph Hearst resided at Casa Grande. Work will:
• repair or use in-kind materials to replace structural steel supports and bell crown
supports;
• repair or use in-kind materials to replace the wooden beams and decorative yokes above the bells;
• repair or replace the motor housings, motors, and playing mechanisms;
• restore the bronze surface of the bells; and
• reinstall the bells, structural supports, motors, housings, and playing mechanisms.

This project consists of the repair, maintenance or minor alteration of existing public or private structures and facilities involving negligible or no expansion of use beyond current levels and projects limited to the maintenance, repair, stabilization, rehabilitation, restoration, preservation, conservation or reconstruction of historical resources, in a manner consistent with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring, and Reconstructing Historic Buildings (1995), Weeks and Grimmer.
