Document Description
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is issuing a permit (No. 2081(a)-19-023-RP) to University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley pursuant to Fish and Game Code section 2081(a). University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley’s activities involving state-listed species include: (1) collection of voucher specimens; (2) storage of voucher specimens; (3) seed collection from wild populations for long-term conservation storage following Center for Plant Conservation guidelines; (4) seed processing, viability testing, and related research; (5) long-term conservation storage of seeds; (6) propagation of plants to produce seeds for longterm conservation storage; (7) transfer of backup seed collections or living plants to CDFW-permitted organizations for long-term conservation storage; (8) export of backup seed collections to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation; (9) collection of small amounts of tissue for genetic analyses; (10) collection of seeds or cuttings for the living collection; (11) import of seeds or plants into California for long-term conservation storage, research, or the living collection; (12) maintenance of plants in a living collection; and (13)
monitoring of wild plant populations.

Reasons for Exemption
The Project will facilitate the recovery of state-listed plant species by collecting
information on populations via voucher specimen collection for storage in an herbarium. Conservation of state-listed plants will also be achieved through conservation seed collection for long-term storage and related research on seed viability. The Project may also involve propagation of plants for conservation purposes approved by CDFW. The permit issued by CDFW for the Project includes measures to ensure that existing populations of state-listed plants are not impacted.
