Document Description
The proposed project will involve replacement of the existing Santa Barbara City College Physical Education Building. Several critical structural safety deficiencies were identified in a seismic evaluation of the 64,894 gross square foot (gsf), approximately 50-foot tall Physical Education Building constructed in 1965. The structurally deficient facility will be demolished and reconstructed. The structure's overall size win remain the same, but facility components (Gymnasium, Life Fitness Center, Dance & Combative Facilities, Classrooms, and Locker Rooms) would be slightly reconfigured within the existing facility's footprint and remain on the north side of the Loma Alta Drive arroyo that separates the Santa Barbara City College East and
West campuses. The three-story, approximately 65,000 gsf, 68-foot tall building is projected to provide approximately 53,000 assignable square feet (asf): 3,600 asf lecture; 2,900 asf office; 46,200 asf physical education, meeting, and food service area; and 300 asf space to achieve compliance with potential American Disabilities Act (ADA) facilities ( expanded bathrooms and access, etc.). Parking spaces (including disabled spaces) will be equivalent to the existing 47 spaces surrounding the physical education facility.

The proposed Santa Barbara City College Physical Education Building Replacement · Project qualifies as Categorically Exempt from further assessment pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act Guidelines Section 15302(a), Class 2, Replacement or Reconstruction of Existing Structures or Facilities on the same site having substantially the same purpose and capacity. It is consistent with the following:
(a) Replacement of reconstruction of existing schools and hospitals to provide earthquake resistant structures which do not increase capacity more than 50 percent.
