Document Description
Rehabilitate the Jack London Cottage Garden areas in the front country Beauty Ranch area of Jack London State Historic Park to represent the gardens as they were in 1916. Work will: • Trim and reduce historically inappropriate perennial plantings (perennials); • Replace some of the existing perennials in-kind, and plant additional historically appropriate roses and perennials; • Remove historically inappropriate trees and trim existing trees; • Plant two (2) new historically appropriate Black Locust trees and one (1) historically appropriate Wild Cherry; • Remove the existing white picket fence and replace with a more historically accurate redwood fence with arched gates; and • Remove the existing rotted root cellar doors and replace with redwood doors of the same design. All work will meet the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Project consists of maintenance and minor alterations of existing public or private facilities involving negligible or no expansion of use beyond current levels; the replacement or reconstruction of existing structures where the new structure will be located on the same site as the structure replaced and will have substantially the same purpose and capacity as the structure replaced; minor public or private alterations in the condition of land and vegetation that does not involve the removal of healthy, mature, scenic trees except for forestry purposes; and the maintenance, repair, restoration and rehabilitation of historic resources, in a manner consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring, and Reconstructing Historic Buildings (1995), Weeks and Grimmer.
