Document Description
The purpose of the Project is to improve habitat conditions in Clear Creek for anadromous salmonid species, including the Central Valley spring-run, fall-run, and late fall-run Chinook salmon, and Central Valley steelhead. The Project will improve fish habitat by placing gravel and other desirable materials into the stream channel with the intent of restoring sediment transport processes, such as coarse bedload transport. Augmentation of gravel supply helps restore and maintain the balance of sediment in Clear Creek, providing desirable river channel attributes like floodplain connectivity, channel migration, fish habitat formation (e.g., spawning habitat), and riparian community development. The Project consists of adding gravel directly (riffle supplementation) or indirectly (talus cone, lateral berm), with large wood and boulders, into the Clear Creek channel. Gravel augmentations consist of adding clean (washed), size-sorted natural river gravel into the creek via three methods: lateral berm, end-dump cone, and riffle supplementation.
