Document Description
Pursuant to Fish and Game Code section 1652, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has approved the East Branch Russian Gulch Fish Passage Barrier Removal submitted by Brook Edwards, The Wildlands Conservancy. The Project includes removal of major log jams in six locations within the East Branch of Russian Gulch to improve fish passage for federally and state endangered and threatened salmonid species. The removal of the log jams would enable salmonid access to three miles of upstream rearing and spawning habitat. Large woody debris sourced from the log jams would be re-purposed to improve stream function and habitat complexity. A seventh project site (Site 3) was intended for log jam removal, however large storm events have opened a flow path through the blockage and does not present a barrier to fish passage. All seven project locations will be monitored for project success.
