Document Description
This project occurs in western Colusa County and seeks to aid fire suppression, reduce fuel loads, and reintroduce fire to the landscape on mixed vegetation types within the pre-contact fire return intervals. This project will use the fuel break and ecological restoration treatment types. The non-shaded fuel break will be constructed along Cortina Ridge; much of this fuel break treatment area is along an existing ranch road. The fuel break will widen the road and create new portions of fuel break to enable the creation of fire control points and staging areas. The width of the fuel break and adjacent brush retention will be determined by the minimum necessary width to create a firefighter safety zone as measured from the center of the fuel break that seeks to provide sufficient distance from the radiant heat of a wildfire to enable safe and effective use of the fuel break during a fire event. Although much of the fuel break will be along the ridge top, it is necessary at times to deviate from the ridge because of the geology and topography of the treatment area. The area was assessed for the potential of shaded fuel break by an RPF, and it was determined that given the vegetation types in the project area this was not feasible. Ecological Restoration is proposed throughout the entire project area and is intended to reintroduce low/moderate intensity fires into the project area to promote biodiversity and reduce fuel loads. Prescribed fire and targeted herbicide applications may also be utilized to reduce invasive species populations, particularly yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis).
