Document Description
The purpose of this project is the development and demonstration of a cost-optimal, robust, and low-cost thermal energy storage fluid, elemental sulfur. Use of sulfur as a TES fluid will enable overall low system costs, long lifetime, and scalability for a wide range of concentrating solar power applications and temperatures. A pilot-scale field demonstration of the TES system will be performed at an existing CSP facility.

Notice of Exemption

Exempt Status
Categorical Exemption
Type, Section or Code
15301, 15306, 15303
Reasons for Exemption
This project will demonstrate a novel thermal energy storage system for storing thermal energy generated by concentrating solar power at the Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, CA. The project site currently hosts CSP equipment and has conducted previous experiments for converting solar energy to thermal energy. The TES technology to be installed and operated is expected to integrate with the existing CSP equipment as a beneficial add-on for storing the thermal energy generated. The materials used to construct the TES system are inert and are not hazardous to human health or the environment. For these reasons the project will not change the existing use of the facility, will not have a significant effect on the environment, and falls under the categorical exemption listed in section 15301.
