Document Description
The proposed Alvarado-Niles Pipeline Seismic Improvement Project includes the installation of approx 4 mi of 14-in, 16-in and 18-in welded steel pipeline in Union City, CA, that largely follows the alignment of the existing pipeline within Smith St and Alvarado-Niles Rd, between Union City Blvd and Decoto Rd. The objective of the Alvarado-Niles Pipeline Seismic Improvement Project is to improve the district's water distribution system seismic reliability by designing the Alvarado-Niles Pipeline to withstand a major seismic event and improve the district's post-earthquake responses to Union City and the northern portions of its service area, during and following a major seismic event. Except in locations of direct conflict with the new pipeline alignment, the existing pipeline would be left in-place but would not connect to the distribution system. The proposed pipeline would be installed within the existing public ROW and may require several crossings, including Alameda/Dry Creek, and the UPRR tracks. At I-880, the new pipeline would connect permanently to the existing pipeline in the Alvarado-Niles Bridge over I-880. Installation of the replacement pipeline beneath the railroad tracks and within the I-880 overcrossing would require work within UPRR and Caltrans ROW, respectively.
