Document Description
Caltrans proposes to rehabilitate mechanical and electrical systems that enable the operation of the Old River Bridge (#29 0045) on SR 4 at the county line of Contra Costa and San Joaquin counties. The Old River Bridge as it currently operates is a narrow, two-lane span without shoulders or sidewalks. It crosses Old River, which serves as the county line between Contra Costa and San Joaquin Counties. In this area, Old River is a navigable waterway under the jurisdiction of the United States Coast Guard. The swing span (the moveable portion of the bridge) is the central part of the bridge deck, which swings out perpendicular to the rest of the structures, opening a passage for marine traffic. The mechanical and electrical components that support operation of the bridge date back to the construction of the control house in 1938, when the operation of the swing span was first mechanized. The equipment is old and appears archaic even to the uneducated eye. The work will be limited to repair and replacement of the mechanical and electrical components, most of which reside within the bridge structure.
