Document Description
The Ocotillo Wells Resources Dept currently surveys five HMS plots at Heber Dunes SVRA. At each HMS plot, avian, reptile, small mammal, and vegetation surveys may occur twice a year. Plots are 1000 m x 1000 m, all surveys will be centered around the center pitfall bucket. Plots may be marked by a carsonite post. At each plot, a permanent pitfall array consisting of 7 5-gallon buckets will be installed. Around a center bucket there will be three arms containing two buckets each. Buckets will be spaced approx 15' from one another. Seven holes will need to be excavated with hand tools for the pitfall buckets. Holes will be approx 1.5' in diameter and 2' deep. Spoils will be packed around or inside the installed buckets. Lids will be securely installed on each bucket, when not in use during reptile surveys. During reptile surveys, drift fencing will be temporarily installed between pitfall buckets. The installation of fencing will require shallow trenching, no more than 8" deep and wide between the buckets. Trenching will be completed using hand tools. The bottom of the fence will be placed within the trench and spoils will be packed around the fence bottom, until there are no gaps beneath the fence.
