W 6th Street Wood Pole Replacement Project

To improve and ensure safe and reliable electric service in Sacramento County, SMUD will replace a deteriorating wood pole located along W 6th Street in Rio Linda with a new pole of sufficient strength to support existing conductor. The pole will be placed approx. 2 feet south of the existing pole and within the existing easement. The pole is located in an unnamed drainage ditch that is tributary to Steelhead Creek. SMUD proposes to replace the 55 foot tall deteriorating wood pole with a new custom steel 65 foot pole. The new pole will be placed approx. 2 feet of south the existing hole of the old pole, at a depth of approx. 15 feet. The old hole will be backfilled with dirt. The new hole will be cleaned out using hand tools and the space around the new pole will be backfilled with compacted rock. Soil that is removed from the new hole will be placed back into the old hole or will be taken off site and disposed of appropriately. Construction is scheduled to take approx. one day. Project related equipment, with exception of hand tools, will be restricted to paved surfaces and other road shoulder and will not encroach within the drainage ditch. All project access will be from W 6th Street. Traffic and pedestrian control will follow all standard safety measures for construction and will be implemented in consultation with the Sacramento County Public Works and Transportation Services Department, if necessary. The pole replacement is located along the east side of W 6th Street, approximately 160 feet north of M Street. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in September 2018, or soon thereafter once project plans and approvals are in place and measures to avoid sensitive biological resources are implemented.
