Document Description
The project will demonstrate the integration of a high efficiency natural gas engine heat pump with a high efficiency solar thermal evacuated tube collector that could reduce domestic hot water energy use in existing residential multifamily buildings in LA County. The project will also demonstrate a hot water controller that could reduce distribution line losses. The recipient will complete technology performance and economic evaluations of the integrated system and of each separate system to calculate the contribution of each system to the whole.

Reasons for Exemption
Project which consist of the minor alteration of existing structures, which involve no expansion of use, are exempt. This agreement involves installation of a natural gas engine heat pump water heating system and roof-top solar thermal evacuated tube collectors. The technology will be integrated with the existing structures, and will not alter any existing equipment or operations, and therefore falls within section 15301. The project which consists of construction of limited numbers of new small equipment are exempt from CEQA. The new equipment installed pursuant to agreement is no more than 500 sf, and the solar system will consist of 1,000 to 2,000 sf of roof space. It is small, and the area impacted is within the existing structure, and thus falls within 15303.
