Document Description
The Inyo National Forest (INF), Mammoth Ranger District proposes to reduce hazardous fuels on 661 acres of National Forest System (NFS) lands within the Mammoth Lakes Basin, CA. The purpose of this project is to reduce potential future wildfire severity and establish wildfire defensible space around developed infrastructure within the wildland-urban interface (WUI) in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. This area has been identified in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan as Extreme. Fuel reduction would occur by thinning standing live and dead trees, and the removal of existing and created (activity) surface fuels reduction operations. Fuels treatments are needed because of the dense forest structure. Large number of developed sites and structures, high recreation use, and the presence of water treatment facilities for the town of Mammoth Lakes. The Mammoth Lakes Basin is a very high use recreation area southwest of Mammoth Lakes. The Mammoth Lakes Basin is a very high use recreation area southwest of Mammoth Lakes, CA on the East side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There are numerous developed recreation opportunities and structures located on lands administrated by the National Forest as permitted business or residences. The project area is located up drainage from the community of Mammoth Lakes and predominant winds and topographic features are such that rapid movement of fire into the community is possible should a wildland fire start in the project area.
