Document Description
Project will treat approx. 400 acres of the PCT and Fuels Treatment in Middle Hayfork Creek Watershed Project. Through this project, "The South Fork Management Unit of the Shasta Trinity National Forest is proposing to precommercial thin and reduce hazardous fuels on approx. 7,000 acres of plantations in the Middle Hayfork Creek Watershed. The proposal is to thin and reduce hazardous fuels on approx. 445 acres of plantations on slopes less than 35% by mastication or by chainsaw thinning with 5 foot release of brush around leave trees. Where mastication is used, all vegetation other than leave trees will be treated and no further slash treatment will be necessary. Leave trees may be conifers or hardwoods. On the 6,000 plus acres of plantations with slopes greater than 35% , only chainsaw thinning with 5 foot release of brush around the leave trees may have all or portions of the slash created treated by chipping. Treated conifers will be less than 8" diameter breast height. Mastication machines will not operate within 25 feet of, or closer than the slope break (inner gorge) of perennial streams. Lop and scatter will not be done within 15 feet of perennial streams."
