Document Description
The project is limited to two (2) encroachments for riparian enhancement activities. The proposed project is part of a larger 10-year restoration effort that is being undertaken by the Mattole Salmon Group, Mattole Restoration Council, BLM, CDFW, SCC, DWR, NFWF, USFWS, and private landowners to enhance riparian and salmonid habitat in the lower two miles of the Mattole River. The goal of this coordinated effort is to restore ecosystem processes to the estuary and lower river, while enhancing habitat for fish and wildlife species and road related sediment issues. This will be done through installation of 400 trees and 12,000 ft. of willow baffles on floodplains and road related bank failure sites. Trees will be sourced from the Prosper Ridge Prairie Restoration Project which is permitted under BLM Arcata Field Office. The placement of large wood and willow baffles on floodplains and eroding terrace margins will provide bank protection along Lighthouse Road, facilitate stable island formation, multiple channel formation (anabranching), scour (where appropriate), and protect existing riparian woodlands. One temporary wet-crossing will be constructed to facilitate access.
