- During a large storm in Jan 2017, rockfall covered the Whitney Portal Rd, damaging the roadway for appro. 250' ft and a 200' section of guardrail. The project location is 10.5 mi west of the junction with hwy 395, and is limited to the existing roadways. Construction activities will include roadway excavation of the damaged areas, placing base and asphalt hot mix and other appurtenances including roadside markers, pavement markings and rumble strips, and replacing the damaged guardrail. Staging will occur in existing pullouts and existing roadway. The Whitney Portal Rd serves one of the most popular trailheads in the Eastern Sierra, as well as private residences and a business.
