Document Description
High flows during the previous winter (2016-2017) caused bank erosion at two locations below a newly-constructed residence along the Upper Sacramento River in Dunsmuir. The eroded areas, if not repaired, could eventually undermine a portion of the foundation of the new residence. The proposed project consists of filing the two eroded areas with imported angular boulders ranging in size from around 6 inches to 36 inches, placed in such a way as lock together, match the existing slope angle, and not protrude further into the river than the adjacent riverbank. The lowest tier of boulders will be placed in the flowing river, but the boulders will be clean and will not be excavated into the river bottom, so no water diversion will be needed to protect water quality. Willow cuttings and non-woven geotechnical fabric will be placed behind the boulder armoring. No excavation or soil disturbance will be done within the eroded areas; the boulder armoring will be placed only within the already eroded areas. Floodway capacity of the river channel and floodplain will not be reduced. Temporary access for 5-foot wide equipment will be provided along an existing bench below the new residence. No trees or shrubs will be removed. One of the eroded areas is about 15 feet wide and the other is about 20 feet wide. Both extend about 20 feet up the riverbank. Existing trees and brush, mixed with existing boulders adequately anchor the adjacent riverbank.
