Emergency Tree Removal - Hillside Fire Response
NOE - Notice of Exemption
In late September 2017, a wildfire started on the eastern hillside of the Cal Poly campus near the Cal Poly "P." The fire forced the evacuation of residents from the Sierra Madre and Yosemite residence halls. Measures to mitigate the spread of future wildfire will include the following: 1. Immediate action: removal of 43 damaged trees on the southeastern property line. 2. Repair of agricultural fencing. 3. Implementation of erosion control best management practices. 4. Construction of firebreaks on the southeastern slope using best management practices mitigation measures. 5. Maintenance of best management practices.
Section 15269, c, exempts specific actions necessary to prevent or mitigate an emergency, not including long term projects undertaken for the purpose of preventing or mitigating a situation that has a low probability of occurrence in the short term. The fire prevention project is exempt b/c the current conditions of the hillside threaten the Cal Poly campus and the city of San Luis Obispo of future wildfires.
